It's that wonderful time of year filled with holiday parties, family and friend get-togethers, and lots of great eats and drinks! And with only 12 more day's 'til Christmas, the countdown is on! Wanting to get some ideas for holiday drinks, we signed up for a Bacardi/Pottery Barn-sponsored cocktail demonstration (complete with complimentary appetizers and drink tastings!) and thought we would share with you their 3 very easy cocktails. Enjoy!
Pomegranate Mojito (This was a crisp, tart, refreshing drink)
Ingredients:
* 1 1/2 oz. Bacardi Superior Rum
* 12 fresh mint leaves
* 1/2 lime
* 1 oz. pomegranate juice
* 2 Tbsp. simple syrup (or 4 tsp. sugar)
Preparation:
1. Muddle mint leaves and lime in a shaker.
2. Cover with Bacardi® Rum, pomegranate juice and simple syrup.
3. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.
4. Garnish with lemon swirl and sprigs of mint. (Making the lemon swirl looked easy - he just hollowed out a lemon with a long, thin spoon and cut the swirl from it)
La Poire Ginger Joy
(Our favorite of the 3 drinks because it was light and bright, we could taste the pear in the vodka, and love the subtle ginger taste)
Ingredients:
2oz Grey Goose La Poire flavored vodka
1/2 oz Canton Ginger Liqueur
1 oz simple syrup
1 oz lemon juice
pear slice or crystallized ginger for garnish
Preparation:
1. Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice.
2. Shake vigorously until the shaker is very cold and frosted outside.
3. Strain into a martini glass.
4. Garnish with a pear slice or crystallized ginger.
5. Scrape some lemon zest for garnish in the drink (he used a tool that looked like a small rake/comb)
Bacardi Gold Rum Punch
(the strongest of the three - as expected when you use a whole bottle of rum!)
Ingredients:
1 750ml bottle of Bacardi Gold Rum
1 L cranberry juice
8 oz orange juice
1 oz lime juice
1 1/2 oz lemon juice
2 L ginger ale
lemon and lime slices for garnish
Preparation:
1. In a large punch bowl, empty the rum bottle.
2. Tilt the bowl and add the ginger ale (tilting the bowl keeps it fizzy)
3. Add the fruit juices.
4. Add the slices for garnish on top.
As our presenter mentioned, a good cocktail - like good cooking - is dependent upon good, fresh ingredients. Any fruits or herbs that are in season in your area could likely be great substitutes in some of these drinks (especially the mojito which is very versatile with different fruit). Cheers!
