Ben's Chili Bowl - A Washington Landmark

A hometown favorite since 1958, Ben's Chili Bowl serves everyone from locals to tourists...politicians in suits to families in jeans.

We headed up to U street in search of their famous chili half-smokes. Luckily, there were no lines when we got there (around 12:45 pm on a weekday afternoon); however, there was a huge crowd by the time we left!

We ordered our food and watched the action from the (original!) counter.

Tons of photos of celebrities line the wall, including Bill Cosby (who is the only one allowed to eat free here!)

Our meals arrives: Ben's Original Chili Half-Smokes ($5.20): The grilled hot dogs were covered in chili, onions, and mustard. It was not too smokey and had a good char. They were really satisfying.
Chocolate milk shake ($3.10): The milkshake was not too heavy nor too sweet. It was delicious and a perfect complement to our half-smokes.

Dining at Ben's Chili Bowl is a rite of passage for anyone visiting D.C. It's a piece of history and, who knows, you might be sitting next to the President!

Ben's Chili Bowl is located at 1213 U St. (btwn 12th and 13th Sts.)
