When you ask the locals of Newburgh, NY (in the Hudson Valley area) where they've enjoyed fond memories with their parents and later their kids (and their kids' kids), chances are they'll mention Tony's Newburgh Lunch.
We recently went up to visit Newburgh, a sleepy town on the Hudson River, and stopped off at this nostalgic institution. What brings regulars back is their famous Texas sauce (so popular, it's now sold to eager customers) on their hot dogs and burgers. This is definitely a no frills restaurant but what it offers is a quick, satisfying meal any time of the year.
Hot Dogs ($1.70) with mustard, onions, and the famous Texas sauce (optional ingredients include sauerkraut, relish, and ketchup). Our old family and friends recall Tony's grandfather (who first opened the restaurant) lining up the hot dogs on his forearm to put on the dressings and can now nostalgically watch his grandson do the very same thing.
The special melt with ground beef and with the Texas sauce ($3.50). Texas sauce is a meat sauce made with ground beef, chopped onions, garlic salt, tomato paste, black pepper, paprika, and chili powder. It is hearty, earthy, warm, and comforting.
Hot and gooey, a bit greasy but cheap. We still liked hot dogs best.
