Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia Wine Tasting: Wine as Art

A few weeks ago, we were invited to a wine tasting featuring Italian winery Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia's latest vintage (Ornellaia 2007).  The tasting was a preview of both the wine and the limited edition labels made by artists Ghada Amer and Reza Farkhondeh. It was an interesting night inspired by exquisite wine.

We nibbled on charcuterie provided by A Voce restaurant while enjoying tastings of Ornellaia 2007.  This Super Tuscan wine was luxury in a bottle.  It was smooth, smelled like berries, and tasted like fruit and spice.
Different colors and textures make the wine label as special as the wine within the double magnum bottles.
In keeping with the winery's artist initiative, every year, an artist is commissioned to create a unique work of art that reflects the special character of the chosen vintage.  This year, these limited edition wine bottles were created to raise money for the Whitney Museum of American Art.
How were the artists (top left) inspired to create these labels?  Drinking the wine, of course!
These limited edition bottles will be auctioned off by Sotheby's auctioneers on Apr. 28th at the Whitney Museum in NYC.
