Earth Day Kitchen Gadget: Sodastream

club soda with grapefruit slices
According to Morton Williams Supermarket (NY Post, 06/27/08), the most purchased grocery item in NYC is a 1-liter bottle of seltzer.  With all the people in NYC, you can imagine how many plastic bottles are tossed out every day.  In honor of Earth Day, we wanted to share a better alternative.  How can we get our fizzy water without plastic bottles?

plastic seltzer bottles
Yes, we were guilty of buying and recycling all of these plastic bottles each week.  Luckily, we received a Sodastream Pure Starter Kit and soon made our seltzer water at home.

Made with stainless steel, the Sodastream Pure Starter Kit is sleek in design.  It's also compact in size, takes up little counter space, and fits perfectly in our tiny kitchen.  Our kit came with 1 CO2 carbonator and 2 reusable bottles.  Each carbonator makes 60 bottles of fizzy water.  (Once the carbonator is empty, you can send it back and have it reused and refilled).  After a few pulls on the lever, we quickly have our own bottle of carbonated water.  We have used the machine for about a month now and it has been very easy to use.

Sodastream also carries a large range of flavored syrups which allows you to make soda pop and flavored seltzer at home.

We don't drink soda pop, but do enjoy glasses of bubbly, sparkling water (with a slice of citrus)...especially when it means less waste (plus less back ache lugging those bottles home!)

Sodastream offers 3 other soda machine designs that range in price from $89.95-$199.95.  The Pure soda machine starter kit (that we received) is currently on sale for $149.95.  For Earth Day, spare carbonators are 40% off.

FTC disclosure:  We received this Sodastream kit plus all of their syrup flavors free of charge, but the opinions expressed are completely our own.  We have since purchased replacement CO2 carbonators for future use.
