Brooklyn Flea: Just the Food

Last year when we went to the Brooklyn Flea, we made the mistake of going there right after brunch.  We were too full to fully enjoy all of the diverse food offerings amongst the vintage clothing stalls. So this time, we came prepared with empty stomachs and ready to devour tacos, hot dogs (with an Asian twist), fresh lobster rolls, and more!

Doesn't this huarache look good? The Red Hook Food Vendors have been serving soccer spectators foods (like this dish) for over 30 years by the ball fields in Red Hook, Brooklyn.  Both Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern have featured these vendors for good reason.  Lucky for us, they're also here at the Brooklyn Flea.

We ordered the Pork Huarache ($6).  A Huarache is a Mexican dish named for the oblong, fried tortilla-like base.  It's piled high with beans, pork, fresh salsa, cilantro, lettuce, cheese, and hot sauces.  Every bite was incredibly fresh and I especially loved the huarache base.

Look at this fresh Maine-style Lobster Roll ($15) from the Red Hook Lobster Pound!  The lobsters are so fresh because they come immediately from the Maine lobster boats (6 hours away) to NYC.  The roll comes with a side pickle and bag of chips.  The toasted roll with chunks of sweet, fresh lobster was the ultimate summer's meal. 

We tried Asia Dog for the first time and ordered 2 hot dogs (2 for $7).  We chose the Wangding (beef hot dog with Chinese BBQ pork belly, cucumbers, and scallions) and the special Kyoko (chicken hot dog with wasabi slaw, edamame, and a pepper yuzu sauce).  Both were interesting takes on the regular hot dog.  The Wangding version was nostalgic to me as it reminded me of my grandmother's BBQ pork belly dishes.  We're glad we tried them, but would likely try other types the next time we visit the flea market. 

Our last snack was the Pork dumplings (4 for $5) from The Good Fork.  We had seen the dumpling throwdown with Bobby Flay so we had to try them.  My hubby liked the darkened seared bottoms on these dumplings.

We cooled off with a fresh raspberry and basil ice-pop from People's Pop ($3.50).  I could taste more of the raspberries than the basil, but it was nice treat on a hot day.

Despite being full, we were so tempted by the baked goods of Scratch bread that we took an egg and bacon muffin to go.  At only $1, it was one of the best breakfast deals we've enjoyed!
