Now that summer has hit with a vengeance, it is the perfect time to breakout some lighter wines, including the oft-derided, yet immensely popular Rosé. Like most people, we've had far too many sweet and cloying wines or ones lacking character. My wife was actually very surprised when I ordered a glass of Rosé the last time we were out at a restaurant. But there are a few wineries I like that make a nice, crisp, clean Rosé that pairs well with seafood, salads, and other light summery dishes.
One of the wines I like is the 2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Rosé. This salmon-colored and refreshing Rosé is 100% cabernet franc with a light berry taste and body. It is a great value like most Loire wines and often cheaper than wines from Côtes de Provence.
Every summer, our local choice is Wolffer Estate's Rosé from Long Island, which is often a good value for home consumption (well at most retailers anyway, I can't speak for restaurants or wine bars).
A couple of widely available Rosés we have enjoyed in the past are the Copain 'Tous Ensemble' Rosé and M. Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes du Rhône Rosé. So pick up a bottle and enjoy these summer sippers.
